Using Code-Behind in SharePoint

Yes, ladies and gentleman, it can be done!

Everyone is always bashing SharePoint on how it doesn't support code-behind.. or debugging for the matter. As a SharePoint Developer, I knew better, so I never believed that, but at the same time I never ventured outside the boundaries of inline scripting-- mainly because I didn't mind it. A while back ago, Scot Hillier wrote a post on this subject-- I read over it but never really went back to it.

Ok, enough about myself. Let's get to the point. My favorite SharePoint MVP, Andrew Connell, is back at it again, tackling the toughest SharePoint topics out there. Check out his detailed article on Using Code-Behind Files In SharePoint, with screen shots!

Thanks AC!

Microsoft launches Tafiti

[via LiveSide.net]

Tafiti, an experimental demonstration site that combines Live Search with Silverlight has just been launched. Its described as follows:

Tafiti, which means "do research" in Swahili, is an experimental search front-end from Microsoft, designed to help people use the Web for research projects that span multiple search queries and sessions by helping visualize, store, and share research results. Tafiti uses both Microsoft Silverlight and Live Search to explore the intersection of richer experiences on the Web and the increasing specialization of search.

Search results are presented in the central column, with the right hand "shelf" available to save result you are interested in via drag and drop. The carousel on the left hand side allows you to cycle through the search results you wish to view (Web, Images, RSS etc) and these too can be saved if you wish. The results you have favourited can then be shared via Windows Live Spaces.

Tafiti also features a tree view, allowing users to visualise the search results in a more "Web 2.0 / tags" kind of way. The tree can be thinned as required by dragging the slider across the bottom. Definitely a neat feature but how useful it is I'm not quite sure.

Go give Tafiti a try and let us know what you think. Do you see any features you'd like Microsoft to integrate in its Search 2.0 offering?

SharePoint Recommended Reading

A few months ago I was surfing the net for WCM resources and I landed on Andrew Connell's website. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. He literally has everything you'll ever want on WCM, it's simply amazing! He was a MCMS MVP and now is a MOSS MVP, so if anyone knows about WCM, it's him! Anyway, he posted up a list of his favorite SharePoint books a couple months ago and I just got the chance to order some of them a few days ago. And guess what.. they just arrived! Check them out...

I've already read "Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005" and it's an amazing book! From what I've heard, Ted Pattison's book "Inside Microsoft WSS 3.0" is a must read, so I can't wait to get my hands dirty with that one.

Anyway, if you want to order any of these books, just click on which ever one you want.

Until next time, ciao!

Day 3 - Trying to find some Internet!

I never knew finding a WiFi hotspot could be so hard! Ever since we booked into the Hyatt I've been without an Internet connection. Yeah I know, that doesn't make any sense.. How can a 5-star hotel not have internet access? Well, it does, but here's the thing, you have to pay $10.45 per day to use it. It's ridiculous! I stay in my hotel room for about 12 hours a day, 8 of which I sleep, so that leaves me with 4 hours. There's no way I'm paying $10.45 for 4 hours of internet. So I thought of another solution.. hmm, how about Starbucks!? Guess what, you have to pay for that as well. And not only that, you need to be a T-Mobile subscriber with T-Mobile Hotspot service enabled. This is really annoying me. Let's change the subject.

Photo's section updated! Check it out.

Washington DC - Day 1

After 11 hours in the air and 4 hours layover in Paris, I'm finally in DC. Not much has happened yet. I just had breakfast and now I'm catching up on some SharePoint reading. MOSS MVP Ted Pattison is hosting SharePoint training on August 13th in Reston, Virginia at the Microsoft Technology Center (about 10 minutes away from where I am). He'll be giving a 3-day course on "Inside Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" which targets .NET developers that are just beginning to develop solutions for MOSS 2007. Even though I would love to attend, the course costs about $2,000. Hopefully I'll get the chance to pass by MTC for a bit though.

In about 2 hours we'll be checking out of the Hampton Inn and going to pick up the car, and then it's off to the Hyatt. We're invited for lunch and dinner today so it's going to be quite hectic. Hopefully I can sneak out and go to Best Buy for a bit smile_wink
